Groundbreaking Begins on New Clinic & Hospital Site

After months of designing and planning, construction has officially started on the new Dean Clinic and St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital campus!

Starting Monday, October 19th you can catch a glimpse of all the action at the intersection of Highway 11 and Interstate 90. Trucks are moving earth and preparing the site for construction. The project takes approximately 24 months to complete and is expected to open at the end of 2011.

Working on the project is Cogdell Spencer ERDMAN, along with Shepley Bulfinch of Boston and J.P. Cullen & Sons, Inc. of Janesville. They are putting the finishing touches on the design of the buildings. Dean and SSM Health Care of Wisconsin are very proud to draw upon talented members of the local workforce.  J.P. Cullen & Sons, Inc. is based in Janesville and employs more than 450 people. About 200 of those employees live here in Rock County.

St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital and Dean Clinic in Janesville will be adding hundreds of jobs to the area and those jobs in turn will spur the creation of other indirect jobs in the community.  Check back for photos of the construction site in the days, weeks and months ahead!

Did You Know? Fun Building Facts

When construction on the new Dean Clinic and St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital begins, you will be able to wow your friends with a few of these fun facts!  For example, did you know the new medical campus will have:

  • 1,073 tons of steel.  This weighs as much as 2,200 cows!
  • 4,530 cubic yards of concrete. That’s enough for forty-five 2,500 sq. ft homes with full basements.
  • 2,303,933 linear feet of wire. This stretches 436 miles, or two roundtrips from Janesville to Chicago.
  • 191,000 exterior bricks.  Laid end-to-end, that equals 35 miles, or the distance of running the track at Monterey Stadium 140 times!
  • 95,400 linear feet of pipe. Think of 18 miles worth, or from Janesville to just past Edgerton.
  • 13,800 sq. ft. of glass. That’s enough to cover more than one Pontiac Convention Center with glass.
  • 21,370 linear feet of HVAC piping. This happens to be enough to reach downtown Janesville from the new medical campus!

To view a rendering of the campus with animated video of both facilities, see our gallery!
