Our superb Director of Project Management, Richard Stoughton, climbed into the stair tower and peered upward to grab this “insider” photograph of the slip-forming system. Thanks, Rick!

Is that St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital President Kerry Swanson?  Yes, it is!  Kerry is taking a look at pieces called flying gang forms, which are used to form concrete for the stair tower.

Janesville, WI – It’s a dirty job, but somebody’s got to do it.! Construction began Monday on the new St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital and Dean Clinic Janesville and already truckloads of top-notch topsoil have been removed to make way. 

Now, thanks to a generous donation, tons of the valuable, nutrient-rich soil – 15 truckloads to be exact – will help green up a part of Rotary Gardens.

“As soon as I heard about plans for the new hospital and clinic, I reached out to Dean and St. Mary’s to see if they might be willing to donate it and they said yes,” says Gary Smith, the board chair of Rotary Gardens. “Fifteen loads of topsoil is about what we need for future development and that would’ve cost us a lot of money.”

“Rotary Gardens is such a wonderful asset to the city of Janesville and we’re happy to help out in this way,” says Kerry Swanson, President of St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital.

“But we certainly couldn’t have gifted any of the soil without the generous donation of time and trucks by Silha and Sons,” says Diane Wilhelm, Administrator of the Dean Clinic Janesville.

Rotary Gardens plans to use the donated soil to help raise part of its 20 acres out of the flood plain to help with the completion of their children’s garden, started this summer. In addition, it plans to save up the rest for use on future garden enhancements.

After months of designing and planning, construction has officially started on the new Dean Clinic and St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital campus!

 
Starting Monday, October 19th you can catch a glimpse of all the action at the intersection of Highway 11 and Interstate 90. Trucks are moving earth and preparing the site for construction. The project takes approximately 24 months to complete and is expected to open at the end of 2011.

 
Working on the project is Cogdell Spencer ERDMAN, along with Shepley Bulfinch of Boston and J.P. Cullen & Sons, Inc. of Janesville. They are putting the finishing touches on the design of the buildings. Dean and SSM Health Care of Wisconsin are very proud to draw upon talented members of the local workforce.  J.P. Cullen & Sons, Inc. is based in Janesville and employs more than 450 people. About 200 of those employees live here in Rock County.

 
St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital and Dean Clinic in Janesville will be adding hundreds of jobs to the area and those jobs in turn will spur the creation of other indirect jobs in the community.  Check back for photos of the construction site in the days, weeks and months ahead!

Since announcing plans to build St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital and Dean Clinic Janesville, much work has been finished including the site plan, a design for the new facility and the hiring of a president of the hospital. With today’s announcement, construction should begin to be visible on the campus sometime in October. It will take about 24 months to complete construction, putting an opening of the new medical campus in late 2011.
