The St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital and Dean Clinic campus is really taking shape, from top to bottom.  In honor of that spirit, we’re going to show you what projects crews are working on all the way from the roof down to the lower-most levels of structures!

Careful: this might make you dizzy!  It’s a great view from the top of the central staircase of the hospital. That’s right, someone had to climb all those stairs just to snap the picture! But once they did, they were treated to some amazing work occuring on both the hospital’s roof and the clinic’s roof!

Dean Clinic will soon be in “tip-top” shape, no pun intended.  The clinic roof is being prepared to receive a ballasted rubber roofing system. We can show you what that will look like! Before…

…After!  Above you can see Gary Brown Roofing employees installing rubber ballasted roof on the top of the hospital.  The clinic will soon follow suit.

Cranes will soon hoist these HVAC cooling towers from their staging place on the ground up to the rooftop to keep the buildings cool during a summer just like the one we are experiencing now!

What else can you see from the roof?  The first layer of asphalt on the entrance to our parking lot.  Here you see the main drive on your right, the clinic parking lot on left and a parking spot with your name on it!  (Ok, that might take a bit longer, but…)

Do you remember when we showed you the footings for the canopy at the main entrance?  Here they are!

Several months later, we now have front canopy steel being erected over the footings, giving the future main entrance greater shape!

The masonry on the outside of the St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital Chapel is a different type of stone.  Beautiful white stone envelopes the wall next to chapel near front entry of the hospital. It’s breathtaking!

On the fourth floor of the hospital, metal wall partitions are being installed.

J.P. Cullen & Sons workers operate several concrete finishers working on the third floor of Dean Clinic.  Two workers are riding on power-operated taulers.  A bowl float smooths concrete in foreground of this picture. 

What does fireproofing a building entail, exactly? Here crews are fireproofing the third floor of the hospital’s bed wing. Plastic helps prevent any overspray of material. 

This is an underground electrical conduit, which runs from the hospital’s electrical room to other areas of the hospital along its garden level.  It is indeed a river of wires!

So much progress has been made on the St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital and Dean Clinic in Janesville that the picture above now resembles some of the renderings we shared with you for the first time last year!  The major difference–no computers were used in the making.  This is the real thing.

Brick work is being done on the East side of the hospital where the diagnostic treatment wing will be housed. Crews are even installing windows on the top floor of the bed tower.  Pictured above is the future loading dock and its retaining wall.  From this angle, you can also see some brick work has been done on the stair tower.

As for Dean Clinic, wall panels were hoisted into place in late July.  Now J.P. Cullen & Sons iron workers are doing detail steel work on the clinic’s top-most level. Thank you J.P. Cullen & Sons!

We also want to take this opportunity to thank Pertzborn Plumbing.  Its workers have been installing underslab plumbing piping at the garden level of the new hospital.

You will see it from a completely different angle, but take a peek from several stories up: the parking lot is being prepared for paving. Don’t worry, we’ll save a spot for you!

Have you ever wondered how landscapers secure retaining walls of major projects? The Bruce Company is helping install “geo fabric” for added strength behind this retaining wall.

If you’re afraid of heights, be careful taking in the view from this bird’s eye perspective! Our cameras captured an entire masonry crew hard at work, helping make the new St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital and Dean Clinic look better brick-by-brick.

The masonry crew of J.P. Cullen & Sons is now laying brick at three elevations at once, up the side of the hospital.

You can see more progress, as an entire side of brick has been completed on the left in the picture above.

To help, crews put two large pre-mixed mortar hoppers on the ground below to assist with the brick laying. 

At the same time, more J.P. Cullen & Sons crews were hard at work on the roof of the building.  This concrete crew was pouring roof slab on the second floor of the St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital using an extremely long concrete pump.

This wide-angle view gives you a better idea of how both the masonry and concrete were being worked on simultaneously. You can see the brick being laid toward the bottom of the photo.  Meantime, this extra-long concrete pump had the convenient ability of being able to transport the mixture to the far side of the building.

Just whistle while you weld!  This J.P. Cullen & Sons  iron worker is welding down Nelson (sheer) studs. It is one of many things happening on the “inside” of the St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital and Dean Clinic construction project. We are pleased to take you on an updated “mini-tour” of the inner workings occuring this month.

In the pictures above and below, H.J. Pertzborn can be seen starting its project of underground plumbing for the hospital. The H.J. Pertzborn crew above was installing “under slab” plumbing at the lowest level within the future hospital.

It can get hot and humid in Wisconsin, especially in months like July.  Still, the winter can bring bitter cold. That’s why an energy-efficient heating and cooling system is being installed in the hospital and clinic. The picture below shows the top floor of the hospital, upon which crews are setting a frame for an HVAC air-handling unit.

Taking the stairs from the top floor is always easier with railings!  Below, you can see Dean Clinic’s “monumental stair with railings,” which is now complete.  The monumental title isn’t official; it just means it will be one of the main staircases within the clinic.

The St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital and Dean Clinic continue their green construction campaign with a site-wide recycling program.  Multiple recycling bins are available with easy access so that crews can sort construction material such as metal, wood, cardboard and masonry into bins like the ones below.

The materials available for recycling can really add up by the end. It is just one more way Dean & St. Mary’s is able to do its part for the environment.

Lastly, we give you a glance of the outside of the hospital and clinic! What is longer in this picture–the crane on the right or the concrete pump on the left?

Stretching across this picture is a far-reaching concrete pump sending mixture over to the far side of the second floor of the St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital.  Next to it, the tall J.P. Cullen & Sons’ crane is busy setting wall panels on the future Dean Clinic!

The new Janesville Medical Campus under construction will provide a full range of health care services, covering everything from planned clinic visits and hospitalizations to unforeseen health occurrences.  Its location, at the interchange of I-90 and Hwy. 11, is especially convenient for both urgent and emergency care situations.

DEAN CLINIC will offer urgent care for minor illnesses and injuries that arise unexpectedly, requiring more immediate attention but that are not life-threatening.

ST. MARY’S JANESVILLE HOSPITAL will provide emergency services for more serious health conditions.  With faster and better care the ultimate goal, the ER was designed with expert input from local Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel.  A full-service laboratory and medical imaging department are part of the streamlined process that will result in efficient yet compassionate care.

Both urgent care and emergency services will have separate entrances, but patients can be guided from one area to another with ease should a particular service be determined more appropriate.

What will one of our hospital rooms look like? Nurses and physicians are working on the design of your room or the place you or a loved one could spend time while receiving care at St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital. We want it to be comfortable, functional and accommodating!

A prototype of the 50 hospital patient rooms has been and will continue to be tested by medical staff and community members. This testing phase is underway right now for future rooms for both the hospital as well as the clinic.

The final design will improve upon the healing environment and provide the utmost in comfort for patients.  Families will be able to see their loved ones and enjoy adequate space while visiting.

Patient care staff is working to perfect the design of the rooms based on how they treat patients in a variety of situations. A mobile, functional room where clinical staff can access equipment and supplies for patients’ needs is extremely important. Having nurses and physicians involved from the start helps ensure seamless care in an easy-to-maneuver-in environment.

Kerry Swanson, president of St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital, was selected from among hundreds of applicants to be a member of the Malcolm Baldrige Board of Examiners. 

SSM Health Care, the parent company of St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital, was the nation’s first health care recipient of the Baldrige National Quality Award.

“I am grateful to have the opportunity to work with such a great organization as Baldrige,” says Swanson.  “SSM’s mission is to provide exceptional health care services, and the knowledge of quality standards that I will gain as an examiner will assist St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital in achieving that mission.”

Swanson has committed to two years of service that includes examination of applicants to Baldrige in many sectors of the nation’s economy.

With the Interstate-90 cloverleaf in the distance, construction crews with a lot of talent and a little luck are making headway on what will become the new St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital and Dean Clinic Town Square area with garden.  On the bottom right of this picture, you can make out the area cleared for that square.  You can also see Dean Clinic steel and the clinic elevator tower on the right. 

These J.P. Cullen & Sons masonry workers are performing their jobs mid-air, so-to-speak, working on the new Dean Clinic elevator tower!

We also wanted to give you an updated aerial view.  This view is looking East from the fourth floor of the St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital bed tower.  You can see our construction trailers and two detention ponds. One of these man-made ponds was intentionally heart-shaped for a very loving and compassionate aerial view. Views from high atop the tower or from the MedFlight pad will include the view of the pond.

April showers bring May flowers as what is in the ground makes its way up towards the sky!  So does the progress on the Dean Clinic and St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital. Work both below the surface and up above is well underway this spring.

The first and second floor steel is up on the East end of the new Dean Clinic near a  future joint Town Square which will link both the hospital and clinic.

Eventually, you will be greeted by a large canopy as you walk through the central entrance.  These are the cement footings for our soon-to-be canopy columns.

My, that’s high! It is the central elevator tower for Dean Clinic.  Right now, masonry work is being completed on the tower using a mobile scaffolding system.

These almost look like outdoor art installations.  Actually, they are our steel door frames for the St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital ambulance garage, pre-erected ahead of the masonry block.

Just as a plant’s roots route water toward itself underground, so too must we route water by installing our underground plumbing lines!   These will serve the first floor of the hospital near its laboratory area.
